Application Deadline: November 2, 2008

Eligibility: The competition is open to all artists 18 or older. Publishers, galleries, agents, and collectors may not submit artwork on behalf of artists. Drawings, paintings, printmaking, photography, digital art, sculpture, ceramics, installations, and mixed media are eligible. Media not accepted: video/film, wearable art (clothing or jewelry). All works submitted must be original in design and concept, and may not be done under supervision. Entries previously shown at the Brickbottom Gallery, or work that is over 3 years old, are ineligible.

Theme: The theme of the show is Mythology. This theme is open to the artist’s interpretation: Greek/Roman/Egyptian Mythology, Urban Myths, Comic book Mythology, Myths and Legends, Fairytales, etc… are all acceptable. Artists are encouraged to take a broad interpretation of the theme.

Entry Requirements: Artists must submit a completed entry form, images of 3 to 5 works of art, and an entry fee of $35 US dollars for the first 3 pieces, and $5 for each additional piece. Brickbottom members receive $10 off the entry fee. (To become a Brickbottom member please click here.) Entries received without payment will not be reviewed. Acceptable forms of payment include personal checks and money orders made out to the Brickbottom Artists Association.

Juror: George Shackelford; Chair of the department of the Art of Europe and Solomon Curator of Modern Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which he joined in January, 1996, as curator of European paintings. Before his appointment at the MFA, Shackelford was for eleven years Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. After graduation from Dartmouth College in 1977, he received the Ph.D. from Yale University in 1986.

Sales: All work, while on display at the gallery, will be sold through the BAA. Commission for the show will be 70 artist / 30 BAA.

Submission Guidelines: Artists may submit up to 5 works of art. For sculptural, three-dimensional pieces, and installations, 2 images may be submitted for each work. Artists may submit 35mm slides, or digital files. Please do not send originals. For the best chance of being accepted, artists are encouraged to submit high-quality images that are well-photographed with evenly distributed lighting and accurate color.

35mm slides: (2" x 2"): Slides should be clearly labeled with artist's name, title of work and an indication for top of the work. No glass slides please. For greater chance of selection, please be sure that the slides are of professional quality, without dust or scratches. Slides will be returned after the show if a self-addressed stamped envelope is provided.

We reserve the right to use submitted images for inclusion in the exhibition and for the purpose of publicity.

Digital files: All images should be saved at a DPI of 300. We prefer horizontal images to have a width of no less than 800 pixels, and vertical images to have a height of no less than 625 pixels. Otherwise, the images will be too small to provide enough detail for the juror. Save the images with as little compression as possible while maintaining a file size less than 1 MB. Images must be saved in the JPG file format only (with a .jpg or .jpeg extension).

We reserve the right to use submitted images for inclusion in the exhibition and for the purpose of publicity.

Drop off and hand pick up of work: The drop off date and time of work is January 11, 2009 from 12-5pm, in the Brickbottom gallery. The Pick up date is February 22, 2009 from 12pm, in the Brickbottom gallery.

Shipment and return of work: Work must be shipped to arrive between January 12th and 17th, 2009. Please ship accepted work, in reusable containers, to the Brickbottom Artists Association, Attn: Julie McAskill, 1 Fitchburg Street, C111, Somerville, Massachusetts 02143. A prepaid shipping label must be included for return of work, or arrangements must be made in advance, with Julie McAskill, for work to be picked up.

Work that is not picked up by January 17th, was not shipped with a prepaid shipping label, or has no other prior arrangements made, with Julie McAskill, will become the property of the Brickbottom Artists Association.

Loan Agreement of work: This form will be sent with acceptance letters and must be signed and returned, to the gallery, for work to be displayed.

Prizes: 1-3 Prizes will be awarded, by the juror, for best in show. The winner(s) will receive a show in the Brickbottom gallery. (This date is still to de determined)
